Google trends useless?

Is it just me or are the graphs provided by google trends pretty useless without having some actual numbers beside them.

It could be graphing the number of searches from 0 to 5 for all i know...

You're right - Google Trends is pretty useless.

However, I made great use of it today.

My client came to me and said, "we have already chosen our keywords, which ones are most popular because we only want to work with 3 out of this list of 5".

So, I queried the five keywords in trends and sure, it showed me which three were most popular!

There are some applications for Google Trends, however, what people really wish it provided were reliable statistics on how many searches are queried for each keyword in a given time period. My guess is that will never happen, Google is too secretive!

Regards

It is very useful. Numbers can be gotten from other tools. What it shows you is trends which is very important. It also makes the relationship between different keywords readily apparent.

Oh, that reminds me. One of my clients works in a seasonal industry. By looking at Google trends for specific keywords, we were able to decide what time to start the SEO campaign in order to target the Winter's session of high search volume!

SEO is something that never stops. However, PPC and other forms of advertising would be seasonal. But that's not SEO. That's marketing.

With all due respect I'm not interested in your doctrine.

Trust me, it was seasonal here.

One of my main sites I used to promote I have now abandoned, and yet almost 12 months later it is still growing in Googles SERPs and has retained the same page rank. It shows how long some of this takes - and that you sometimes need a bit of luck too.
