There are two types of sitemaps: xml sitemap (for search engines) and html sitemap (for visitors).
An XML sitemap:
- Ensures better visibility by search engines
- Enables you to rely less on external links that will bring search engines to your site.
- Helps with broken internal links or orphaned pages that cannot be reached in other way
- Alerts search engines to any changes/additions to your site
- Helps you choose pages that you don’t want to index
An HTML sitemap:
- Ensures improved search and navigation by human visitors
- Improves user experience thereby reducing bounce rate
- Helps you distribute links to various pages of the website

There are several types of site maps are available. Such as, HTML sitemap, RSS feeds, ROR sitemap, XML sitemap and text sitemap. A sitemap is for both visitors as well as search engine because it makes easy and quick travel on the website over the internet.

Site Maps
Basically, there are two kinds of sites maps
1.) HTML Sitemap
2.) XML Sitemap
Sitemaps are basically used for easy navigations in the website. It can be either a document in any form or a web page that lists the pages on a web site, typically organized in hierarchical fashion. This helps visitors and search engine bots find pages on the site. HTML sitemaps are for users and XML sitemaps are for web crawlers.

There are many types of sitemaps:
HTML Sitemap(For Users)
For Search Engines:
Images Sitemap
Video Sitemap
News Sitemap
Text Sitemap (urllist.txt used for Yahoo site-explorer which is going to be stopped)
Google GEO Sitemap
XML Sitemap or Google Sitemap
Generally all of the above are used by search engines and all except the HTML sitemap are behind the site and are rarely seen by the users. They are used to feed the search engines with the urls of the pages, images, videos, news etc.
Html sitemap is the default sitemap that is used for providing users with the website navigation. It is suited for the users, if it is well designed and is divided into categories and sub-categories. For large websites having many number of URLs, if the HTML sitemap is not well categorized, it will be difficult for the users to find what they are looking for.
Sitemap protocol is followed by all the top three search engines. The Sitemap protocol uses an XML schema to define the elements and attributes that can appear in your Sitemap file.
Out of the three search engines, Google is the search engine that emphasize more on using sitemap to feed urls of videos, site pages, news, images etc to it. It help the search engine to find all the urls at one location.

Having a site map is better for both search engines and user but the type of site map for each is different. XML is a type of site map that is better for search engines since it is written on a search engine friendly language whereas HTML type is more for the users end.
