If you are looking to be indexed by Google, check out their webmaster guidelines:
http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35769

In general, to be indexed by Google, you need their bots to visit your site. This will take a few days to few months depending on:

Your inbound links (the more the high quality incoming links you have, the quicker Google index your site)

Google takes into consideration relevant links with high PR, keyword density and fresh content.

No way to instant results apart from PPC (look at Google's adwords or Yahoo's PPC).
Otherwise can take take many weeks/months to see results after building good keyword rich content, high quality backlinks and navigation which SE's can read.
Also don't forget the directories... entries in relevant directories for your industry can be worth their weight in gold.

Link is the path through which googlebot reach your website. So link building is very important and make sure that the website that link to you must be recognized by google. If you want your site to be indexed in less amount of time then get backlinks from relative high PR site which are frequently crawled by google. Also submit your site to directories like dmoz, yahoo etc. Finally don’t forget the Google sitemaps it also helps you to get index quickly.

it's not require to submit your site in google, but yes google should be able to search your site. to make yoursite searchable try to participate in some forums and articles with link to your site. by doing so you can win the trust of google.

why will you win the trust of google by doing so?

google always give highest mark to the content(information) and if you are getting links from sites full of information then that link become a golden link, which you can get by writing good articles and submit those articles to article directories like ezine articles(www.ezinearticles.com).

4 simple steps to make your website searchable ?

Quote:
How to make my website searchable in google?

1. Your site needs to have content, which helps initially
2. Then get some IBLs (In Bound Links) from some quality site related to your context.
3. Create a sitemap file and submit it to the search engines
4. Verify with a text browser, whether all the pages in your web site are crawlable.

These 4 simple steps should help you in making your website searchable in Google as well as in other search engines also.
