Such is the quandry of all webmasters, my friend. This is not an easy task.

Its easiest to start by joining Google Adwords or Yahoo Overture. They allow you to pay for sponsored links when people search for key words.

A more effective, but much more labor intensive way, is to create content that cannot be had elsewhere. Go to similar websites. Ask their webmaster (nicely) if they think linking to your site is a good idea. Out of every 20 or 30 requests, you may get a link from a few - if your content is worth it.

Word of mouth is good too but takes forever. Tell your friends. Put a link at the bottom of every email you send.

Find forums that deal with topics similar to your website's. Become a member of good standing and link to your site.

One way I have had success is using old fashioned off-line advertising to get visitors. An advert in Maxim got me more traffic than all my Adwords pot together!
