I guess it depends on what sort of market you're trying to appeal to. If it's a really popular one then it might be necessary to spend a fair wedge of money. It might be better for you to tailor your marketing, sponsor a forum relevant to the product you're selling etc.

Are you willing to do your own SEO? If so, tell us what your SEO goals are and we can try and suggest some techniques. I can't recommend any companies as I've always done my own SEO for the sites I run.

I worked for a company that did thier own internal SEO on their own websites. Most of the terms that we were going for were online gambling, so it was a very compedative market.

i worked for them full time for close to two years, and over that time the only expenses weere my wages, and the computer that I was working on. The wages were, of course, the biggest expense. By the time that I left, the 25 sites that I was working on were paying for me, and another one of me. How did I do it? All manual SEO. No programs, no PPC, nothing. Good organic white-hat SEO work that boosted my sites.

Find good directories, exchange links with good sites (preferrably on topic, but anything that isn't banned helps) and keep checking every day. It all comes down to you being willing to do the work youself. No program can substitue for your own knowledge and experience.

My uncle was just quoted £15k for an "SEO makeover". I told him not to bother! He could employ a Uni student on a placement year to do it full time for that amount and probably get better results.
