Linking - To and From
Evening,

I'm trying to build a link campaign for my site but am not certain of the dynamics yet.

Should a external site that links back to our site's root page, be linked to on our site via that root page only to be a successful SEO factor, or can I link back to them via any page I choose?

It depends on the agreement you have with that site owner. Usually a link within content is more valuable than a footer link or a blog roll link.
When exchanging links I usually ask for a link in the home page or a page that is one level down.
