When a sites domain registration expires, or the domain is transferred (yes, it's the same thing unfortuantely) all of the backlinks and page rank are lost.

I've seen this with a couple of domains that I've bought. One was a PR5 with 2,500 backlinks, and a month after I bought it it was a PR0 with 2 backlinks. Same with the expired domains that I've re-registered as soom as possible after the expiration.

If you look at www.domainannounce.com , you’ll find deleted and expired domains, which you can register for. This means you’ll get to use the links already set up for the domain, and the search engine entries.
