Maximum characters in title tag?

Hi there,

Is there a maximum number of charcters I am allowed to use in the title tag... if I use too many, will it make it un-friendly?

Thanks!

One of the fellow SEO'ers within my community ran a sample test on this a few weeks back - the results were quite surprising: Hobo Title Tag test

Remember that Google only displays 64 characters in its search results, the rest are clipped. Also take into consideration user behaviour - good titles can catch an eye and help with Click through Rates.

The title test in the article pws mentions is very interesting reading. So google reads very long title tags. The danger is in spamming the engines by creating artificial titles that are stuffed with keywords and dont help the user.

Use 65 character or less also re-using the title tag of each page as the H1 header tag would be beneficial.

Hmm, that's interesting experiment. Though I can see it's not a homepage, and that's good, you've tried it on the subpage. It's indexed by google, that's what you want to say... well, google indexed everything but if it falls under spamming it will get banned after 2-3 crawls, I guess. It's not at all suggested to stuff your title tag or even the body of the page with keywords. This is also observed these days that Google does not ban right away.
You might want to experiment on this, be careful though
