well, u get indexed faster. thats mostly it. but then rest works exactly the same. another good practice have google adds present on your site, that actually better then paying them, it also improve chances that you will get indexed faster and earlier then u would on your own, and if just submited your site URL to google.

I didn't see any benefits for paid listing in search engines if you don't get any traffic
