Please explain confusing Google search...

I do genealogy for family members and often when I find a particular website that I have Googled and it's on(let's say) p.2 in the listings, when I give those same search words to someone else and have them check out p.2., the link is not on p.2 and sometimes not found at all. This happened with a relative who was just across town and no matter how many times she keyed in the exact name to search, nothing came up even though I was looking at the link on Google.
How can that be?

Additionally I may see 1150 results for those search words and the other party see 2000 results.

Any info would be appreciated...thanks, Kislanya

There's several reasons that could happen. These include (but are in no way limited to):
  • Filtering preferences that are set in your individual browsers
  • IP address filtering for geographical locations.
  • Tracking that's been done by Google (mainly if you've got a Google account or the Google toolbar)
  • Which Google data centre you actually get the results from, yes they do differ
There's a lot of reasons why this could happen. That's just how Google works. The way they search is very complicated, and no one (except maybe the engineers there) know how it all works and how it's boiled down to bring you the results back.

if data center will change than google might give different result. some time what happen is your default search is selected as your country domain like google.fr while searching for query. and people who is searching from other place has select google.com so you will find lots of difference in search result. you can set it by google toolbar setting.

So as I don't have a Google Toolbar or account and seemingly no way to change the other 3 possibilities, there isn't anything I can do about it.
But I appreciate the explanation, thanks alot...Kislanya
