Question about naming html files for better ranking maybe?

I guys,

If I want to name my html file..

say that the file is an artist's name, which one of these is best to use for file's name in term of for better SEO and all those stuff that bring traffic to the site.

1. avril_lavigne_bio.html
2. avril-lavigne-bio.html
3. avrillavingebio.html

Which one from the above is best to use or it doesn't matter at all?

Numbers 1 & 2 are equal and are the best choice. And it does matter. Keyword separators can only help and never hurt.

I agree with stymiee. using either a dash or an underscore will only help the SE read the naming convention of your page properly.

The SE's can still pick out avril Lavinge from avrillavingebio.html but there is more chance for error - so stick with either 1 or 2 for best effect.

Hello,
it will be batter to use 2nd option first and than go for 1st option.but don't go for 1st option.

I'm curious as to why you say this. Since both are considered equal in the eyes of the search engines why would you give one precedence over the other?

Anyway, I think underscores are not seen as dividers in many cases.

Yah, I'd stick to hyphens, periods, or commas. Most people seem to prefer hyphens. If you use an underscore '_' character, then Google will combine the two words on either side into one word. So bla.com/kw1_kw2.html wouldn't show up by itself for kw1 or kw2. You'd have to search for kw1_kw2 as a query term to bring up that page.

Spaces in words however, %20, should be replaced by the underscore according to google at least.

Google just announced that underscores are not keyword separators. Yahoo, MSN, and Ask.com all confirmed that they use them as separators themselves.

I'd rather go for either the 2nd or the 3rd option.

Though Google has recently claimed that underscores are now treated as word separators just like hyphens, I still find it considering underscores and characters.

Moreover a quote from Matt

Quote:
If you read Stephan Spencer’s write-up, he says some people thought that underscores are the same as dashes to Google now, and I didn’t quite say that in the talk. I said that we had someone looking at that now. So I wouldn’t consider it a completely done deal at this point. But note that I also said if you’d already made your site with underscores, it probably wasn’t worth trying to migrate all your urls over to dashes. If you’re starting fresh, I’d still pick dashes.
