Redirect using frames
I have a couple of domain names that I purchased from easily.co.uk. They are redirected by easily to point at some web space I own on a different server. The redirect uses a frame so that the original domain name still appears in the URL bar.
My question is what does this do for the Search Engines?

Nothing, the search engines are smart little things. They can tell if a page is a redirect or if its a page beloging to a particular site. The pages may get indexed but you wont be seeing them at the top of any search engine. The pages as they are at the moment are more like holding pages. So it will not count in any way to either a good or bad search engine rank. In the long and short of it all, these pages will only get ranks once something of some value is put on them. In the mean time they are just a basic redirect. |

Hay Domainman right so when you say it is redirecting via a frame what exactly do you mean?
Do you mean that you go to a page that is in a frame and then within that frame your page is loaded. or... Does the top frame stay the same ie: you load the top frame the bottom frame is then loaded with your site and the top frame remains for advertising? Is the top frame in the source after the page has loaded? If you are the first one is more desirable than the second that said the use of frames......well.....both you and them should know better Frames cause issues for accessibility, as well as Search Engines, and thus leaves you open to legal action. Also Firefox 3 I do believe is dropping support for frames so I'm not sure how it will work then. Ok now that is sorted with the redirect you need to know which one it is - 301? 302? 307? The only one you want is a 301, in this case, the other 2 will cause you problems with indexing. Bare in mind a 301 page will take some time to pass equity to the rest of the site due to the search engines having to reassign the equity to the correct page. This can take as long as 6 months. It may not but it's not instant. But even if they say it's a 301 I would still look at the headers that are being sent. They will tell you if there is a problem. I do believe SEO chat has a header checker as one of their tools. If not let me know and I'll get you another one that I know works. Some claim to work but don't so be careful, you need to find one you can trust for it to be accurate or it will cause you even more grief as you swap redirects randomly. Jaz |
