register domains for 2+ years
i was renewing my domain name yesterday on GoDaddy, and i read somewhere that you can get higher up on google if you have your domain registered for more than one year, meaning its the "real deal." i guess that kind of makes sense. is this true, or is this godaddy asking for my money?

I have no specific knowledge of this but... (a good start)
I'm pretty sure that won't be true. Clearly, if your domain is better established and has been registered with the same site for longer, it is more likely to be well placed in search engines. They're probably using obscure logic to twist this horribly into a version where it makes sense for you to pre-order the next 100 years. Apart from anything else, I was under the impression that at least some top level domains are not actually registered for more than a year. Rather, when a client chooses a multiple year package, the registrar offering that package simply takes it upon themself to keep renewing as appropriate until the end of the agreed time. This may only apply to .uk domains (and are they only 2 years?), or I may actually be talking sense. Either way, I think it would be illogical for any search engine to give any serious consideration to this in search placements. |
