Search engine visit some pages not others

About a month ago I revised copy within one of my client's sites to try and improve ranking for a specific set of keywords.

After updating the site, I submitted the updated pages to Google (to start with). After about 2 weeks Google revisited the site and reindexed the home page and a newsletter page which is linked from copy on the home page. These pages are now updated in Google and rank higher for the specific set of keywords than before the rewording update.

However, I also updated other pages in the site, but Google has not yet reindexed these pages. The page summary Google lists for these pages is based upon the old version of the page's copy, not the newly updated copy.

So it seems that Google selectively indexed only the home page and newsletter page for this site but not others, even though the others are linked to the home page (but not in the copy on the home pagethat changed after my update). These pages are linked down the side in standard navigation fashion.

How might I get Google to revisit a particular page within a site for reindexing? (I did submit specific pages from the site to Google but these are not yet updated after about 4 weeks, eventhough Google has obviously visited the site and reindexed some pages)

Thanks for any suggestions.

by external backlink, do you mean placing a link to the required pages from a 2nd web site and have google visit the 2nd web site?

Does the domain of the page containing "backlinks" need to be different than my client's site domain, or can this be done under my client's domain?

If you had a friends site and they linkswapped with you, that would be creating backlinks. You cannot have backlinks from the same domain.

Are you sure the other pages are correctly linked from the homepage too?

yes, the pages are linked to the home page. I will try the backlink technique.

any ideas why the search engine would visit one page but not others?

Search engines will index all links, but may not follow them all at the same time. If you have a page that is linked to many times (internally or externally) it will be indexed as a higher priority than a page that is not linked to so often.

The only way is more links. Put all new pages on your site map and link every page to the site map.
