SEO is only one aspect of website promotion. You have plenty of other ways to promote a site including press advertisments, trade journal ads, Google Adwords et al.

Of course, for quick(er) impact a paid solution will bring visitors to a site but that can soon eat into your promotional budget.

DIY SEO may not yield results quite as quickly but, IMO, would generate more targetted visitors in the long run, with a higher degree of people viewing your site because they are looking for a specific service or product (that you have optimised for) and therefore your site costs per sale would be much lower.

Sorry, IMO == In My Opinion.

I feel that good product/service/market site optimisation would produce the more cost effective, sustainable results in the mid-long term.

I would suggest that you head over to SEO Chat and have a look at optimisation help and Website promotion among others.

Have a good look through some of the articles there and you should get some valuable detail and insight into SEO.
