SEO/Google Happy Main Page Redirect

instead of my main page going to www.mysite.com/index.php I want it, when www.mysite.com is entered, to go to ww.mysite.com/updates/index.php (I want that to be the homepage, if you will)

what is the best & proper search engine & google happy way to do that?

Do a 301 redirect in .htaccess:

redirect 301 / http://www.mysite.com/updates/index.php

Redirects are not recommended much when it comes to SEO, Its always better to have the main URL instead of a 2nd or 3rd level link
