Question Social Networking-- What is it?

Hello everyone,

I've been reading several posts about social networking lately as a great way to get quality traffic. I may just be an old geezer, but I'm finding it difficult to understand "what" exactly it is. Blogs? Posting to MySpace pages? Some of the posts I see on blogs are quite "spammy."

Also, how is it being used to bring in traffic?

Thanks for the help!

See wikipedia's entry for Social Networking.

Basically, social networking is just another way to get a link out there to your website with the hopes that it generates lots of traffic and thus brings in more links to your site.

You need to devote time on these social networking sites expecially through creating a community of similar group, you will find an easy way to increase your linkability through tagging and making bookmarking easy, and let your content travel fast.

It supposedly can also help with SEO. Tags in social bookmarking sites can assist search engines in associating keywords with URLs. I believe that's one reason Yahoo bought del.icio.us.

The direct SEO benefits of social networking are very elusive that they really can't even be considered noteworthy. The only practical purpose they may serve is the opportunity for a huge influx of visitors if you can land on their homepage. But the chances of that are small and for most websites not worth being considered a practical solution for delivering traffic (although there is no harm in trying).

And Yahoo didn't buy delicious for its tags. They bought delicious because it is a huge success and they needed it in their portfolio of services.
