sudden drop in rank, spam?

I dropped 10 spots in google overnight

I own www.bodyjewelry99.com and add

"body jewelry, gold piercings, belly button ring s, belly ring s and labrets!"

to the top of about 200 product pages, I checked my logs and google has been crawling my new pages since the 31st of last month but the change just now happened. Would google concider what I've done spam, or if not would I be penalized for adding the new text?

Exclamation ...

I'm not an authoritative source, but I'm pretty sure that google ignores meta tags. I believe the only ones they pay attention to are the ones that direct googlebot not to crawl a particular page or pages.

Although Google ignores meta tags when it comes to deciding whether your page is relevant or not, apparently it does read them and if it uses keywords that are not used in the body content on your page, you can get penalised slightly for it.

So - if you have those in your meta tags, and your pages aren't about them, take out the ones that aren't relevant. Generally using the same meta keywords or description everywhere is against what they are there for - i.e. they are supposed to be a description of the page your are on, not the whole site, which is why you can get penalised.

However, it could just be that Google is updating at the moment, and you'll drift up and down a bit until it settles down again in a few days.

Just a side suggestion: another spelling for 'jewelry' is 'jewellery' so it would be a good idea to have that in your site somewhere.

I wouldn't be too worried about it. I monitor a very competitive market segment and the top ranking companies change about almost daily it seems. It's like riding a rollercoaster for some of them.

Yes, Google have been ignoring Meta tags for a couple of years (or maybe more?) due to keyword stuffing abuse. I personally still keep them in but that's just me - doesn't do any harm. More details here

It reads the title and text on the page - basically what you see as a human. That's why there's so much advice around saying get at least 200-250 words of text on your pages, that seems to be the least Google is happy with.

Google has never based it's rank on meta tags and has always gone on a combination of the text on the page, and the links to the page. Nowadays it seems it also looks at how the text on the page is structured within the HTML, links in and the text of the links in (and apparently near the links at the moment.)

The meta description is used by some engines as the description of your page on their results (sometimes with a mix and match from the page text.) There are a few meta only engines still around, but they're all very small/niche.

link exchange is ok, and drop in rank is very common if you get that position not very long ago, sometimes google do things wildly, continue work on your backlinks, you will be back sooner or later

Unhappy

I think google downgrades links from "link Farms" type of things.

I lost 2 PR from 7 to now 5 after Iregistered my site in "linkstoyou" system

I now assume that i need to wait for every members of this linknetwork to get my link out of their pages..

the bad thing is that many members dont update their link page, and therefore my link stays there, which is bad for ranking.

Since i left the system 6 months ago, although I have almost doubled my traffic and x1,5 the number of linsk to my site, Im still stuck with a PR of 5..

it's an error thinking that google ignore metatags, it is only that they aren't so important for them
