how much does invalid html actually effect search engine indexing?

the site looks fine when viewed through a browser, so the user won't know any better but i'm concerned how bot take it when they scan the files.

we won't know how much it'll affect SEO, but we know it does. Use a online HTML validator to check your page

MSN encourage webmasters to write valie webpages. No orphan tags for example.
