What am I doing wrong?Why don't I get listed?

See, I have this site, It's been around awhile. I submitted it to about 39 search engines (free 25 + 14) over a month ago, some said I'd be listed in a day or two. Here is the thing; none of them list anything about my site. Nothing! I did a search for this guy’s site on yahoo and he just mentioning his site here at dev shed gets listed. I "mentioned" my site here 3 times!!!! Why won't anybody list my site, did I do something wrong????

From Yahoo:

Assuming that the site you are talking about is the one in your profile, I have looked at it.

The site itself is neatly layed out and a great idea, but for the SEs it is almost meaningless !!

For a long time now the main SEes have been trying to improve the RELEVANCY of their results for their customers.

You MUST have FOCUSSED Pages which have meta tags, titles, headings, body text etc, all with the KEYPHRASES which you want people to find you on.

The title tag is especially important.

I would suggest you read up all you can about the search engines (including what they themselves say ) and optimising your pages for them.

I would also suggest you download "WebPosition Gold" for a FREE trial period, and use their "Page Critic" to help you improve your relevancy.

Altavista is probably the easiest SE to get a good rating on, with Google the hardest.

Unfortunately AV has only about 2-3% of web traffic now, but it is a start.
