What does Google prefer: html or php?

I had a website made up in html. Now someone changed it for me in php and I lost all my positions. Is this only temporarily and do I just have to wait until Google indexes the new php-pages or is it better to change it back to html?

N.B. Not an expert

Those php pages are brand new as far as Google is concerned and you're going to have to wait to get 'em re-indexed.

If you're on an Apache web server, you could use the Redirect directives to tell someone who clicks a link from Google that the page location has changed and send them to the php files.

It will also be of benefit to anyone who has the old html extensions bookmarked.

The latest buzzword are nice URL's - ones that don't change over time and look nice for both people and SE spiders.

Take a look as how this page URL looks like. It's something like:
http://forums.devshed.com/search-engine-optimization-108/what-does-google-prefer-html-or-php-361223.html

It is much better than say:
http://forums.devshed.com/display_post.php?forum_id=108&post=361223

But as html part might change - it can also be improved by striping off the .html and .php part since that might change in the future when you change the technology you are using (say you start using Perl instead of PHP).

You do all that "magic" with help of mod_rewrite plug-in for Apache (I guess there are plug-ins for other web servers).

Thoku agrees: totally agree, boosted my site rankings. Much easier in .net!

Thumbs up Configure Server..for PHP & HTML..No rank drop..

Hi there,

There is a briliant way to handle this situation. You can configure your server, so that even if the page has html extension and PHP code in it, it will execute PHP code as well and still all your URLs and page will remain same.

This solution works fine without dropping any rank. Let me know if you want us to work on this solution.

By the way if you want, we can provide you FREE SEO ranking report. Just send email to me at Ankur@aceinternetmarketing.ie -I am SEO Expert at AceInternetMarketing.
