What happens to SE-indexed, but old homepages (like frames)?

Hi,

my parents have a Frameset as homepage.
This is outdated (i made the homepage back then) and i would like to convert the actual design to either tables or CSS (probably tables, since it is easier for me - and faster ;-) )

My Question:
In Google the result of one of the frames comes up first, when searching for the homepage. When I change to a different design - how do I manage this old and then outdated rank listing?
Will I have a 10 second wait and redirect to the actual page then? Or can I tell Google (or their robots) somehow that the page does not exist anymore - without having my clients experience a 400 error?
