Where to go from here with SEO?

Hi All-

I've done all kinds of research and visited all of the big sites around, but I can't seem to find one place that really says what matters. Like how much to H1 tags really make a difference, how should I program the site... Do server redirects really affect things? You know, all this stuff. Also, does anyone have any thoughts on Web Position 3? My boss is really putting the pressure on me to get our rankings better and I'm trying to develop a good strategy to do this, but can't seem to find any definite good directions... Any suggestions?

Thanks,
infinity003

all you need now is experiment. Of course nonbody knows the exact algorithms for search engine rankings except those enginners who work on it. What we can do is to apply the known SEO principles that have proven working well.

Thanks for that. Do you know of any good resources that might detail some of the more "known techniques"? Also, does anyone have any thoughts on Web Position Software?

Thanks

Planet Ocean's Search Engine Newsletter is hands-down the best resource I've found.

I used Web Position back in 2000 to get some websites listed. Within 2 weeks I was ranked top 5 in Google for my main keywords. So it worked very well. Things are more difficult now though. First get all the content right and make it a site people want to link to.

Tool like WebPosition don't do anything you cant do yourself, but they do save a lot of time.

From what I understand Google relevancy is more determined by how many inbound links you have along with the link text the refers to your site more so than keyword frequency, density, etc. And that Yahoo is the opposite. So in this situation, it seems like Web Position Gold would be better for helping to optimize pages for Yahoo rather than Google. Does anyone think this is an accurate assumption? Thanks.

Smile There isn't a simple fix for acheiving top search engine placement

Hi. I understand your frustration. There is no quick fix when it comes to improving search engine placement. All things are important and have to compliment each other. For example, you can't have a website with great keywords and title tags without keyword rich content. Every element has to work together. Here are the steps you should follow:

1: Identify targeted keywords for your website. This is important. Keywords define your website, their not just words in the keyword tag. They develop your theme. Once your keywords are defined, you can start to build out your site from there.

2: Using your keywords, come up with a strong <title> that includes those phrases but sounds focused and makes sense. Don't just jam in the keywords. Be sure to populate your keyword tags. Create a market savvy meta description, using the keywords.

Note: Its ok to use the keywords forward, backward, etc. However it makes sense. Don't forget your audience is human and it has to make sense to them too.

3: Original Content using keyword rich text. This includes using <H1>,<H2>, <ALT> tags etc. Its important not to sp@m here. Read your content out loud and see how it sounds. Don't make it spammy, stiff or unnatural.

4: Utilize your link text. Put keyword rich data here too and you'll score some extra points.

5: Make sure you have a sitemap thats accessible from the main page with all of your web pages presented here. It makes it easy on your visitors and the search engines dig it too.

Just remember, everything goes together like a well written story. Everything is important.

Good Luck.
