www.icanlearnit.net

I recently added my site to all the major search engines. Ive managed to get listed on AllTheWeb, MSN, HotBot, Lycos and I can be found in google but for some reason I dont have a description or an keywords?

As I mentioned my site is icanlearnIT .

When I have finished developing my site I made sure I had optimized the site to make sure I got a good placement in the search engines, can anyone suggest ways I can get a better rating. The obvious ones are adding content to my site which I am slowly building up, the other is getting linked to on other sites?

Anymore suggestions would be appreciated.

Optimization for keywords is a very good way to start. The search engines change so much that most companies have to play a guessing game on search engine, unless they have insider information . But, making sure your images have good ALT tags, the image name is a keyword or describes the image in a detailed manner ( not to long ). Your page names should have '_' if there are spaces. Also, good directory structures such as: www.yourdomain.com/keyword/keyword.html. Do not use pages that contain a question mark such as a dynamic php called ( www.yourdomain.com/keyword/keyword.php?var=23 ). And like you mentioned already good content rich pages. Load your website will useful information. I MEAN LOAD. Try to get your website linked on other websites also. This is very important, the more links you have on other websites ( websites that have good creditability ) will get you more traffic routes.

Thanks for the advice, when i developed the site i used mod_rewrite to make sure the links were search engine friendly.

I guess my next step is to get some content on the site and mention my website on other sites

There is no magic answer. My own web development site has a single link, with a very short description, to the site of one of my clients. Their site is FULL of content, & fairly well optimized for their keywords. However, a Google or Yahoo search on one particular phrase brings MY link page as #4, and their site is nowhere to be found. It just shouldn't happen, but it does. Concentrate on content. Link to appropriate sites. Provide a site map. Basically, stick to the basics & you should do well. A lot depends on just how competetive your keywords are, too.
