XML sitemap is specially designed for spiders so that they can easily search all the web pages of your website and indexed it when someone type a keyword in your niche. If you not attached xml sitemap it will be very difficult for web crawler to crawl your all webpages.

Most Blogging platform have in-build RSS feeds and have pinging back method. These RSS feeds do the work similar to XML sitemap for the search engines. Also, if you don't have access to FTP/server you won't be able to add XML sitemap to the blogs. But if you are using blog on platform like from Wordpress.org then you can use the XML sitemap by installing plugins for wordpress

You can use the XML sitemap for your blog. An XML sitemap is very light and helps search engine crawler to know about all the webpages of a website from one single file (you may create more than 1 XML sitemap file if your website has more than 10000 pages).
You can generate sitemap using sitemapdoc(.com), xml-sitemap(.)com (remove brackets). Just google for xml sitemap generator and you will find a number of websites.
Submit the sitemap to google webmaster account and verify your website by adding the code provided by google.

They also act as a routing aid by giving a summary of a website's information at a single look.
Sitemaps are a useful device to make websites created in Display and other non-html dialects retrievable.

Yes, you can create sitemap for your blog also. Sitemap can be generated for both Search Engine bots & visitors. HTML sitemap is used for visitors when XML sitemap is for SE bots. If you are using WP blog than you have to download relevant plug-ins for it.

Site map is just like road map, if you have then you can easily go to your destination and more chance to cache all pages of the site. The XML sitemap protocol is specifically designed for spiders.
