Weird one this!
We have a multilingual site, English, Russian, Portugues and Chinese, however the client wants to be found in the chinese version of Google.
The meta works, different meta tags for different languages, but because it's all on the same domain '.com'.
Can we be found in those google versions?
If not, how do we go about doing so?

By multilingual do you mean that you have separate content for each of those language? Simply using a localization tool and translating wont give you much results in search engine in other countries.
If you want to be found in Chinese version of Google you need content specifically catering to those markets and keywords. From my experience direct translations from English keywords don't work because that is simply now how people use search engines, especially for long tail keywords.
As for .com having localized domains like .cn certainly helps.

Basically the client has translators, when the user clicks on a specific page, and the country 'code' is 'zh' they get the translated copy, that is written and entered by these translators.

Then your content will be found by the relevant country specific search engines. If it's a not there already consider building some back links.

You should optimize with several search engines with several languages.

Multilingual website is deigned to target audience world wide with different languages. Using Translator is best option according to region. Ex. when you translate English version to french use your domain name/fr.
