Happy New Year everyone,
I'm using a 3Com 11Mb SR 1000 Access point, with a 3Com 3CRWE62092A Wireless network card. Now the problem I'm having is in configuring it to disallow unwanted access. This is where I'm clueless, as its the firs time I'm trying to use one. If there are general steps in configuring some sufficient security on the access point, I'd appreciate some direction. Thanks, Roger |

The best method of securing a WAP is to limit access by MAC ID IMO
This allows for User Access, can't find a link for the 3-Com site at the moment, but this should be what you're looking for. Also use a WEP key

Re:
Thanks Axweildr, but as far as what I can see in the WAP configuration, it doesn't allow you to limit access by MAC Address. Also, when I try to configure a WEP (which by the way I've never done, so as to how exactly I should go about it...I'm slightly clueless) it alows me to select what type of encryption I'd like to use (40-bit or 128-bit), but at the same time I'm not allowed to specify a string used to generate shared keys, nor does it allow me to specify the keys I'd like to use. Which by the way I find confusing because when configuring the wireless card for security, it requires that I specify a network key. Note that both the WAP and the wireless card are of the same make (3Com).

\ i would double check and make sure that WPA isnt available on ur router in the settings to allow you to specify " connection only by certain macs" any way WEP is so easy to crack but if u had to i would go with the higher encription 128.
and if there is an option in your menue of the router to not brodcast your ssid , that is another way to secure your AP. but like i said, still not secure with wep, |
