Good. It's a consensus, then.

Just to clarify, this confused me for a while as well..
Cryptography is the science of making codes and ciphres.
Cryptalanysis is the science of breaking those same codes and ciphers
Cryptology is both of those rolled into one with anything related thrown in, oh I found this on the net a while ago, I thought it was apt:

Cryptanalysis is the science of reading them anyway.

Sign me up.
I'd move over from DevHardware for this. (I'm spendig more time here anyway, due to my need of your C/C++ forum anyway.)
At the very least, a discussion on security related issues, not just cryptography/cryptanalysis/applied cryptography might go a long way to help n00bs with the ideas behind it.
Actually, if this fails, is there somewhere I can go to get crypto related discussion that is not USENET or security related discussion a la Bruce Schneier's blog?

Yeah, to be technically accurate, it should be labeled "cryptology". And to help broaden the scope to not just include theory, but also actual implementations and such, a name like "Applied Cryptology" might be good. Not that I stole the idea from "Applied Cryptography", mind you

*sigh*, the book only deals with cryptography, it doesn't say anything about cryptalanysis, are you happy now?

Since there is close to no traffic in the security forums here and the subjects are closely related, I'd suggest to change "Security Policies" to "Security and Cryptography".
But I personally doubt there would be much more traffic than now.

That's probably best considering that cryptology alone isn't really worth it but it's practical application to security would make changing the existing forum better.
I also like the idea of a trial run to see if there's interest. Then making it permanent if it's reasonably popular.

That could actually be quite interesting. I know absolutely bugger all about Cryptology so it will be an interesting forum, for me anyway.

Someone told me that ROT13ing everything twice was stupid, so I do it ten times for extra security.
