Dialup transfers
Hi everyone.
I've got a question here. Suppose i've got a dialup accont, with no encryption enabled (i'm talking about the win nt secure connection). Does this mean that my password is sent via telephone line in plaintext, or is a hashing algorithm performed on it and then the data is sent? -Nar |

The password would most likely be sent as plain text down the phone line. this wouldnt be a problem since you have a direct connection between you and the server down your phone line. The password is not being sent via the internet.

The reason i'm asking this is ecause the telephone lines around where i live are easily tapped, so i was wondering if somebody could copy the connection signal and then reproduce it into his or her pc to retrieve the connection data.

They might be really lucky and be able to somehow force their modem to connect but I very much doubt they can decode the information and get your signup details out of it. I will be very amazed if they can achieve that.

What do you mean by being able to decrypt the signal? Did you not say the password was sent in plaintext. Also if the signal is decrypted at the server then one could basically set up a dialup server on his pc and reproduce a prerecorded signal into it.
