Digital Certificates

I have a digital certificate for my workstation, how do I get the server to check if the certificate exists and validate it.

Server is apache over linux, X509 certs are in Netscape and IE

I assume you have to send special headers, but I haven't had much luck discovering these
any help would be appreciated.
