Open ports are not dangerous (just like guns are not dangerous), the servers listening on them can be dangerous (just like the people with the guns in their hands are dangerous). The best thing to do is put a firewall between you and the unsecured network and block every port except the few you need to do your business (default-deny). Windows has several ports open by default that are very powerful and have a long history of vulnerablities (the known ones are all patched, but why make those services available to the Internet?).

No need for a face to face talk
I'll try to make it more simple. Just imagine a wall with tons of doors numbered 1 - 65535. Now imagine your Internet Explorer as a person that gets the parts you need to view the web sites, to get them he leaves his room and goes through the door #80 to get all the information, then comes back. He only uses the door 80 because it was assigned to him and he only has a key to unlock that door. so no other possibilities. If you give him another key, he could use other doors, but no need to because it works fine that way. This is a weird imagination but now you can replace the doors with ports and the people with protocols. very simple right ? Now everything would work fine if there wouldn't be the evil ppl that have a key to unlock certain doors. like a trojan, a trojan opens some of those doors to get in whenever he wants. If you have one of those trojans you need to personally seal the door. By sealing the doors i mean locking the ports. to lock a port you need a firewall. they're the policeman saying who can get in and who can't get in by which doors..... ok ? ![]() peace |
