Smile Crypto Algorithm Question - One fine doubt in DES

hi recently i appeared for an interview.
they asked for DES parity bit on key bits.
i answered what is parity bit and odd and even parity concepts.

but their question is
why parity concept only in DES not in other algorithms?
what is the significance of the parity bit in DES?

any body can help me in this...
