Question Secure Web Pages

I'm trying to find any aplications that can protect directories, and/or files on the server, I worked with .htacess but I don't like the promt window on it. Trying to find some applications that would let you input usernames and passwords from the the webpage. (like text fields .. i'm having trouble to explaining this)

Is there a way besides http://username***@url.com to pass username and password to .htacess or what other aplications can do the same thing.

I don't want anything that you can bookmark and comeback later to the same URL without being promted for username and password either.

Help, Let me know if I'm not clear,

I think you are looking for something like "restricting access to your pages", take a look at those scripts: http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scrip...Authentication/

Kinda not really, looking for something that would not require me putting the script in every page I want to protect,

I'm using Linux O/S and perl and MYSQL to do most of my dynamic pages, I haven't really started to learn php,

Don't think it's possible, anyway you'd better ask in perl forum, I used php as an example because I don't know perl or asp.
