Protection against modification of web software
I am a developer, mostly PHP, and I distribute my software freely, but each owner must still go through a very short registration process so I can keep track of who is using my software and where they're are using it, etc
Does anyone have any ideas about how I can force someone to keep an original copy, rather than making modifications to it?
For example, one package that I produced contains a conf file in it that stores a license number. While they can edit that conf file freely, I need to make sure that the license is valid. How could I connect to my database remotely to validate it? When do I connect?
Any advice, please...

Impossible to enforce that, unless you make a CGI script (written in PHP) and in binary form.
