Question Timing attack against a DES software implementation

Hi everyone...as I am new to this forum I really don't know how to post.

Please go through this link :

    soc. eurecom. fr/ HWSec/ labs/ des_ta. php (remove spaces)

I am new to cryptography and I really don't have any idea about timing attack.

So, can you explain me what's going on here and what to do.

    Thanks in advance.

Is this your assignment? The point of the lab is summarized very well in the beginning:

Do not work in groups, not even in groups of two. You will get a much better understanding and get the maximum benefit of the lab. While far less difficult, sitting near a geek and admiring how fast she is will not be as beneficial.

Lets be blunt. Do your own homework.

Otherwise, you are cheating. Perhaps you will pass the course, but you will not learn anything. The point is not to pass the course, rather it is to learn the topic.

    technoman,

The concept of a timing attack is simple.

The time that a computer takes to execute an algorithm, may depend on the inputs (arguments) to that algorithm. The variation of timing with respect to input values will depend on the how the algorithm is coded, and the computer hardware.

When the algorithm is cryptographic, measurement of execution times can give clues (partial information) about data that is meant to be secret: the key and/or plaintext.

The partial information from a timing attack may not be sufficient to recover the key or plaintext, but it may narrow the space of search attacks so that they become practical to carry out.

If the paragraphs above don't make sense to you - or after spending a couple of hours, you don't see any way to begin a attack on a DES implementation - then you are not ready for the course you are taking.

You may need to deepen your education on some concepts of computer science, for example. Don't be discouraged, but DO study hard. By doing the hard work, you can become a real techno man.

    dear technoman,

could you please say how you did it.I am not familiar with timing attack much, and I am not a computer science or IT Eng as well (I am Elec Eng). I am looking for some information in timing attack in practical way through my research.
If you can help me about the course, any suggested book, or even you lab reports I would be really appreciated.
