How do Netcraft calculate uptime?

Maybe the wrong forum for this, but anyway:

Just wondered if anyone here knows how netcraft ( URL ) calculates the uptime of webservers?

It's not something that's reported from webserver thru the http headers so I'm really curious how they do it

It's been a long time but according to them they ping the servers or something (they call samples). Search.
