Yeah. Does JCaputo regularily update the vB version, (although this may take a long long time), I think it's worth it.

But don't hold me to that.

Regardless of teh current version, JC has already stated several times that he isn't likely to upgrade to the latest and greatest version of vBulletin due to the sheer number of hacks implemented on the Dev sites.

In accordance with one of Jacob Nielsen's articles, where he states that a 404 message should obey the following:

* design a customized 404 error page for your site - it can't help but be better than the standard error message

* start with a simple and slightly apologetic statement that the requested URL could not be found on your site

* add a listing of the most common mistakes in specifying URLs (you can write this list after studying your log files to see what errors are made the most)

*if possible, perform a spelling check on the requested URL and list any close matches (made into hyperlinks so that the user can go directly to the desired page by a single click)

* finally, the error page should have a search field linked to the site's search engine: even when users can't guess the current URL, they may be able to specify a query to locate the desired information

In order to use the 404 "response" to a greater potential, instead of being redirected to the homepage, the user could be redirected to a search page with the search results for a digested version of the original URL (possibly spell-checked?).

To keep the whole thing within DevShed, the user would be redirected to igrep. This would, at the same time, give more exposure to DevShed's own search engine.

Additionally, to keep advertising revenue in tact, the user could be presented with a set of ads (pertinent to the search). Optionally this could be implemented only if the request originated from a 404 error (via a GET/POST parameter or similar).

Yea, but that way it would be more obvious. And people would become more familiar with igrep, which will give it a bit more recognition. Just an idea.
