I don't see your point; it wasn't ignored. The link earlier is to an invalid thread, not a 404 - it's a custom error page... if you get a real 404, it automatically redirects to the forum index.

I see your point. But invalid thread is basically "not found". I don't see anything wrong with this getting implemented though. |

The only thing I can see about returning a 404 rather than the invalid thread page is that a search engine would be less likely to index a bunch of invalid thread pages. That doesn't really affect devshed much though.
One could have the page return a 404 header rather than a 200 and still show the invalid thread page, or redirect to the home page or something. Best of both worlds I guess. I don't really see a need to change anything though.

Yeah, I contacted some vB developers. They are considering it for the next version
. phpBB's developer community is not even interested... |

That's understandable for several reasons. For one thing, vB developers get paid to do it and they then sell their product to you. phpBB developers, aside from being lazy f*cks (they've been creating phpBB 2.2 for what, 4 years now?), are doing it in their free time. Free time != money != motivation. |

Well, they are very much interested in something called "MODs" which allow photo galleries and embedding media. But they are not interested in improving the overall program... |

That's because there's a dedicated MOD team (not officially) & basically users do them themselves. Also phpbb developers have been known for their laziness when fixing holes and their hackish programming (the source code looks akin to spaghetti napoli with a fork stuck in the middle). |

Well, phpBB is good for non-serious things. Note that one of the biggest forums in the world (that RPG forum) is running phpBB though...

This horse is dead, you can stop beating it now ;-)

Hey, I never discredited the phpBB developers, just pointed out what their (voluntary-)work schedule looks like most of the time. phpBB, of course, on a "don't like it, don't use it" basis. I fully appreciate the time those people put into the development despite full-time jobs. Thumbs up! phpBB is great, because it's free and powers many communities that wouldn't exist without the unarguable price-tag. Also, phpBB is pretty safe once you take it upon yourself to patch/hack it. And I quite like it to be honest. It's nice and clean (on the outside ).![]() |

Damn phpBB guys. According to them, phpBB is "feature frozen" indefinately, meaning they won't improve unless it's a serious security issue.
By the way, if anyone's interested in this header stuff, read this. |
