Moving to a more search engine friendly sites, why don't you guys return a true 404 Not Found on the invalid threads etc. Just a thought.

What would that net us?

Make it a better website. Better matched search results in search engines. It's not something that would affect us directly, but it's a good practice. |

Wow, I can't read that. Anyway, come on. Don't you think we should be good people "not too concerned about ad revs." and frankly display a 404? I hate when I click on something in a search engine and then get redirected a bunch of times without knowing what the hell happened. How about 404 with a link to the main page? If the user is interested enough, they are going to search it. If not, let them go back. I can already see 6 different ads in this invalid link. I dunno, but as a provider of computer helps and stuffs, shouldn't we be the good people following good practices of "actually" displaying a 404? By the way, when was that discussion running? |

Or we could add a meta tag in the invalid link
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW"> Are we concerned in providing other users with information more? or are we more concerned in getting ad revenues? Surely, having this would mean less Google hits, but what's the point of making them follow what doesn't exist? Make a trap so we can get some ad revs? ![]() |

Exactly. The user wants something on your site, if you don't have it then take them somewhere they can FIND what they were after.

JCaputo would probably be open to letting you change where the 404s go if you take care of Dev Shed's payroll and upkeep expenses (ie, you owned Dev Shed).

Well, I do have sort of an agenda. Remember when I had that XHTML Google running? Anyway, I'm interested in compliant stuffs.
OK, how about this? Display a 404 error that will redirect in 2-3 seconds thing. Enough notice to the user, and probably enough hits to the main page. As long as it displays 404 at some point, I have nothing to complain. Like when we log in. |
