I have been a member for a short period. I was enjoying
the forum, upto where I wanted to help a member. Example: a members ask's a question, the answer I may have would be to long or complex to explain But I know a site that has that info. what am I to do if links are not allowed? Now the first thing your gonna say is SPAM SPAM this is why we don't let links in the forum SPAM. So don't say it I already know, but it is kinda over board, sort of a paranoid action? Now I myself have no need to SPAM, infact I was here to help, and get help, to become part of the community and to be free to share important links of info if it helped to point a member of this community to the right place for that info. and if there is a 90 day wait on that then I can't really contribute, I am just a bump on the log. sitting by. Now most of the questions a member might ask I could write that info out in a post. but I don't want to write a whole book. thats what Knowlage based sites are for. I am just having a hard time with understanding such paranoid actions. It's like a webhost service I once knew that was so paranoid, they turned off sendmail and did alot of other things that made it go out of bussiness. And most of it was becouse the tech team was not good with security on running a server, which is coused by lazyness on there part. (lazyness impeads knowlage) which also impeads fairness and leads to bondage. I own a hosting data center, I turn nothing off, I find other ways to combat people who abuse the system. Members of any service should not pay the price for what others have done in the past. So my question is, are these actions put into place becouse you don't know how to stop, or combat it? Now if you take this post wrong, I might have to question your character. I truely want to know what is lacking in the teams knowlage. I am a professional, asking a very important question, it goes no farther then that. Zcoder.... |

You are now over your 5 post threshold, you can now post links, relax
![]() We've had a number of drive by spammers, and the forum software doesn't permit posting links from members with less than 5 posts in order to combat this, there are forums such as AntiVirus and a few others where this is less than ideal, but it's a small price to pay. With respect to your hosting, and accessibility, I commend you, but there are those who will exploit your generosity, I wish you well Your post above seems a little harsh in light of this information, perhaps it could stand a moderate edit, to reflect this, and not in the role of character questioning. If you modify it, please post below, that I may remove this component from my post Kind Regards

PR is very important when running any kind of service,
be it a forum, or what have ya. With that said, I seen the link relaced with a message about looking at the forum rules. So there it began. Very large hunt for anything that had to do with posting links. I could not find it, which is not to say it's not some where on your rules page. It would have been easier to have the script put "link is missing due to member being under 5 posts" or anything that would have been more inforative. That alone would help in PR or, you could POST it in such a obvious place not hard to find. like maybe right at the top of the post form, which would disapaer once the user has reached this posting level. So I keep the post above intact, to show what I have been talking about. Anyways about the character statement I made. I said nothing about anyones character only those who would have told me what I already said in the post or who would have tooken the post wrong. And now that I have the information I needed to avoid all this. I would say this is done. but I would work on making the post limit for links more availible and easier to find. and never assume new members can find their way around. (make the site more user freindly) Zcoder.... |

It's the decision of the site owners and administrators, not the decision of the community or moderators. I'm a moderator and member but not otherwise having any interest in policy. As a high traffic site there have been some incidents which require clean-up effort. Everyone seems to acknowledge that it can be a hindrance and a turn-off to a first time member with a legitimate need to post a url (e.g. to seek assistance in debugging) but it seems a cost/benefit rationing.
I do think you raise valid points, but there might be some valid suggestions to take of it without a whole overhaul of everything recently done in the interest of cleaning up detritus. Perhaps a more friendly inline warning and explanation might go a bit toward morale and positive PR?
