    Why can't I PM anyone?

When I try to send a private message, I get this error:

^ the 10 post rule was implemented for entirely that reason. We had a number of spammers do that.

Yes, but it's not that hard to make ten random posts. So if I want to create an account for the purpose of PM spam, clearly I'll be more than motivated to spend 5 minutes making ten random posts. So, for the stated purpose, the rule is worthless.

Sure, but ten random posts will most likely be caught by mods first & the user watched. AFAIK, we haven't had any cases of PM spamming since it was implemented, so it is working.

It works exactly the same way that car alarms do - they wouldn't stop dedicated thieves, but just makes most of them move on to the next car. The 10 post rule is nothing major, but it just makes the spammers move on to the next big forum.

Nope, at least 10 minutes because there's a 1 minute floodgate between posts. Then there's writing the posts too...

And the idea is, as Simon says, just to deter them and then perhaps the mods catch the more determined ones.

Technically, the floodgate is 30 sec

It further prevents automated sign ups, and spamming is like burglary. It prevents the opportunist.

Considering your supposed web development knowledge (going from other threads) you don't really know much about it! Especially security or standards.

    On a related note:

Can members with less than 10 posts receive PMs?

I just sent a PM to a new member with <10 posts and I wanna know if I can count on him receiving it or not. It didn't occur to me until after I sent it that there was a 10 post PM rule....
