I'm still up for a common sig, but to kick it off, how's about another change to the FAQ's at the head of each forum

Instead of the current title something along the lines
"[FAQ] - Welcome to the Developer Shed Network - Read First"

and in there have a few links to each of the sites, and a short synopses on what they do.

Also in the welcome to forum mail, a link to an area for new users to find out all about the Network.

Perhaps on the "Your account is awaiting activation, thanks for registering." page you could have a small blurb with links to other forums?? For people to read whilst they're waiting to activate?

How long do you want to activate? all it takes me is the time to log into my mail and it's waiting there for me, I click the link and done.

That's because, with a few exceptions, all the entries are through news-group servers.

I curious whether the entries I make through the forum interface make it out to the news-groups and what they look like...

not unless the forum is hooked up to pass it on to a newsgroup, and it'd just look like an email (sorta)
