Customize which forums you want to see
I'd like to suggest that as these forums keep getting bigger that the be some way to allow me to customize which forums I want to see. It could be as coarse as just having a scroll up for each of the large categories (Programming Languages, Programming Languages - More, etc.) but I'd really like to be able to only see the forums I want to see on the "main" page (http://forums.devshed.com/).
The goal is two-fold. The first is that I often refresh the main page to see what forums have new posts. Perhaps there are other usage models but that is what I do. The second would be that it would allow additional forums. For example, there was a discussion in this forum regarding adding a QMail forum. By allowing me to view or not view particular forums many more forums could be added. However, I recognize that a particular forum that gets two posts a month is virtually useless so this benefit might be minimal at best. I also realize that this is not a trivial task. Maintaining on a per user basis the forums to display isn't minor. Nor are the issues of how to announce a new forum so that people know it is there and letting me modify what forums I actually want to see. Is my usage pattern different than others? Any thoughts are welcome. |

To subscribe to a forum, go to the forum page, click on "Forum Tools" (on the top right of the thread listing), and select "Subscribe to This Forum" from the drop-down menu. The forum will then appear in your User CP.

Ok, that's in the ball park, though kinda cluttered.
Really a new forum model needs to be created. This linear list type of thing isn't quite right. I'm not sure what is correct myself - maybe a portal type of model with different forums and classes of forums in a single portlet. Maybe a tree structure where I can expand and collapse nodes. Maybe both. Hmm, all the forums I visit have RSS, maybe something with that. With my copious free time maybe I'll just whip that up. Thanks for the information. |

I just keep a folder in my bookmarks toolbar for all the forums I visit. In each folder, I have all the forums within each forum I most commonly visit.
