Editing old threads
I know I don't come in much nowadays and I probably don't have a lot of right to whine but it's really really annoying me how I can't edit old posts in my linux FAQ thread. I wanted to add a note about ext4 in there and I wanted to update the contents. Now it's all fair and good saying email the moderators but frankly why should they be burdened with this? Now I know it was put in place to stop people from getting pissed off and zapping all their old posts but I don't see anyone with above 1k posts doing that, perhaps anyone with a sufficiently large amount of posts should be able to edit their old ones.
Just an idea, feel free to shoot it down. --James

There are several reasons for this, not least of which were people posting
Joe1234: Hi I need help! Jim1234 (same IP): Hi Joe! Thereafter the thread falls off the list and joe comes back and edits with Pr0nSpam.

You get 30 days to edit your posts before you no longer can't. Personally, I think that is long enough as how many members will actually edit posts that they posted more than 30 days ago ?
If the change is that important, then a moderator will do it and if you want to edit to add a large amount of information then why not just add a new post to the thread ?

It was actually one of the older members with close to 2000 posts who started deleting them which spurred the admins into setting the restriction...

The problem is that I wanted to add an update to mention something brand new on a post that's a few months old. And at the same time i wanted to update the contents post. It doesn't warrant a new post but there can be quite a lot to say all the same. |

Here's a thing, faq's as redirects to threads on devarticles, actual articles, so there's bound to be some CMS to keep tracks of edits on that site, non?
Alternatively, maintain the FAQ's off world, and just link to them. I'm not advocating this off the bat, as there's content there that would require the agreement of the admins and/or original posters in order to facilitate the move. I'm just thinking out loud ...

Why not post a reply instead of editing your post?

because there could be a number of posts between his and the reply, and not too many look at long threads in 'threaded' view, it's still a valid point.
Another possibility would be to allow for insertions, a little similar to the way SMF does it forum.thread.response, and instead allow for forum.thread.response.subedit. I know vBulletin does it differently, but it's so crazy, it just might work |

Personally, I still think 30-days is long enough to be able to edit posts.
