Fairness of rep.

Hi,

I was wondering, over the past few weeks I have noticed on devshed, that the rep words have been changed from 'approve' to 'agree' and 'disapprove' to 'disagree'. I think this is a bad step, because where before, rep was ++ed or --ed for putting forward an argument, making people laugh, helping people or putting forward a bad argument, being abusive, immature e.t.c Now rep is used as a way of posting another post, at the expense of the user's rep and feelings.

I prepose that we change the rep system to say approve & disapprove, as it is becoming near impossible to put your head above the sand and say something which is likely to be controversial, without getting rep--ed and people thinking that you are a bad member.

What do you guys think?

I assume you're talking about the lounge here...? If so, then what's
the problem? Everyone's rep gets abused in the Lounge. If you want
to say something you think will get you repped down, reword it and
back yourself up; you'll probly end up getting ++'d for it. If, however
you are saying something controversial just to play deviles advocate
then yeah, you're pretty much asking for a --.

Yeah I disagree also, I think the rep system should be turned off for the Lounge. Who has the most --'s in 1 post btw?

I think that would be Microsoft. Bottom of the rep list by
quite some distance...

least 2 of which appear to have been intended as --'s, but the
users just clicked on the wrong option...

Hehe and sepodati agreed which boosted him/her a lot, sep is at an incredible 9000+ posts.

I brought this topic up a while ago. It's in this forum somewhere. I wanted to have it changed to something like "contributed to the community" and "detracted from the community", but that's too many words. Can anyone think of one or two words to say the same thing? Basically, you rep++ someone if they contributed something positive to the Dev Shed community and rep-- if they did something to take away from the community. This way, newbies who ask well thought out questions and post them can get rep++ for their hard work as well as those who give good answers. Spammers, advertisers, computer, etc can get the usual rep--.
