Perhaps the excellent "how to post a question" in the php forum could be extended to other forums in-order to maximise the usefulness of the forums. It may not be known to some but I (and presumably others) found these forums by googling for certain problems. Naturally asking a qustion in the right format extends the useability of the forums to existing/future members and casual browsers.

That might be a good idea, 'cos when I saw the subject of this thread my immediate thought was "why would you want to post a question in every forum?" Nice touch of irony!

Lots of forums sites have those types of lists in each forum. I agree that it should be stickied into each individual forum. Each mod could touch it up a bit to make it more personal for each forum, as well. For instance, the Lounge obviously would need a slightly different version than SQL.

Yeah the title is a little misleading but nonetheless its a good idea. The mother of howtos is probable the how to ask questions in a smart way linked to on the Apache site. It includes a very important section - How To Answer Questions in a Helpful Way
Quote:
Asking a questions in some quarters on the web could get your ears bitten off. That howto applies to both newbies/experienced users answering questions. People forget they were once newbies. |
