Incorporating the Folding hack on DevShed to promote Folding@Home and DevFolding team
We have a Folding hack at DevHardware to promote the Stanford project of Folding at Home we are all proud part of. In a nutshell, 'Folding at Home' is a distributed computing project which analyzes effect of protein related abnormalities on cancer. On DevShed also, there has been a thread titled DevFolding . Many members from DevShed have been or currently are active folders and are helping our cause to help run those simulations on their computers and utilize their spare CPU cycles to cure diseases.
![]() After seeing active interest of DevHardware members about folding, there was a hack proposed to encourage Folding among existing but unaware and new members coming there. Original Discussion I propose having similar hack incorporated here to promote this activity. We have many members here who rank among toppers in DevFolding team. The team name suggests that it is not only DevH specific team but represents the DevShed community as a whole. It will attract current and new members to know what Folding is and how much helpful they can be. I sincerely request you all to visit the links I provided at least once. And give it your humble and honest thought. There are more folding related links in my signature. It takes nothing more than installing a small client on your computers. There are no spyware/adware/malware/virus related issues involved. Also, JC and company: You have been very kind in allowing such improvements/changes on DevHardware. You know it doesn't hurt much to build this hack. If the turn up here is good enough, please give it a try!! ![]() PS: If needed, I can add a Poll to see the interest.

I respect your agreement guys. But I would appreciate if you post your opinions too. Otherwise it wouldn't take long before this thread is pushed on 2nd,3rd page of new threads and be lost in tens of threads we add every day.

Hey...
Just registered, though I thought I had a while ago... Anyway, I'm a regular over at DevH along with tejas and 1/2insane. Just wanted to say that we appreciate any help you guys are willing to give in this endeavor. After all, it doesn't take much to fold. I've been folding for... sheesh, not long after I joined DevH I guess, a little more than a year. I started folding on one machine, the only box available to me at that time, an old 700MHz Athlon. Folded that way for most of my folding 'career.' Sure, it didn't put up big numbers, but every little bit helps, and that's the point I'm trying to make. To start, you just have to pick your client type, I'd imagine many of you will pick the console (for DevHers, 5.04b is out by the way), and even on dial-up it takes no time to download. I know that well - for all but the last couple weeks I was stuck on dial-up, and folding on dial-up wasn't a problem. Maybe your old computer only does 25ppd (points per day average), that's all my old one would do it times. But it's something. After all, after setting it up, you just let in run - in the background as a service so you don't even have to look at it if you don't want to. |

Ye our Folding output increased quite a bit after the forum hack, so it's worth the effort imo.

If it promotes it, then why not ?? I'm all for it !
To be honest, I had completely forgotten about folding@home, so just started again. I'm rarely in DevHardware so if the hack was over here too then I wouldn't have forgotten...........does that make any sense !?

I started Folding shortly before we came up with the idea for the hack, and I've seen quite a few people join during the discussion and development of the hack and afterwards. I see about half a dozen DevShedders are already folding, a few I am determined to catch up to- Chief, Sep, Ax... as well as a couple who have apparently stopped actively folding-- Devcomputer, MBirchmeier. It looks like Raklet will catch up to me soon.
![]() I will take Tejas' idea to the other forums, I think it would a great thing to get little healthy competition going among the different sides of the Dev domain, all the while helping out a good cause.

yeh, im another Dev. hardware member migrating over here .pity my name's already taken .anyways, folding . the whole idea for the folding hack originally was to reward folders with cool little icons, and make non-folders go "hey, what're those cool little blue things, i want some!".i think Jcaputo originally said that it would be a trial at dev. hardware and then possibly migrate over to the other forums once it |
