This is a vbulletin thing, it's always been like that, it's because the database isn't updated on delete, saves resources I think, not to big of a problem, someone normally posts fairly quickly

One would imagine that the thread had been pruned by an admin
(or possibly deleted by a moderator).

I think these links are stored somewhere else to display on the main page,
and subsequently not removed when an actual post is deleted..

It's cleaned on a cron job, so give it some time and it will be back to normal. Or, someone just posts there and you don't notice it anymore
