.NET Dev forum: 'how to post a question'

(Regarding the suggestion to prefix the thread title with the .NET language being used by the op.)

Whether a person is using VB or C# (or whatever) is only important when they have a question specific to the language rather than the framework itself. Quite frequently, one can be translated to the other, so perhaps prefixing one's thread subject is nothing more than an academic distinction.

Most often, questions have to do with the framework itself.

To avoid potential confusion and irrelevant answers, the important distinctions to at least state in their post (if not the subject) are whether they are doing ASP.NET or WinForms (like if their question has to do with controls), and what version of the framework they are using.

Regarding environment context in general:
Now that I think about it, many of the forums have relevant specifications that should always be mentioned when asking a question, particularly version numbers.

PHP 4 vs 5
MySQL 4.0 vs. 4.1 vs. 5.x
.NET 1.1 vs. 2.0 (vs. Compact Frameworks of each)
VB6 vs. VB.NET (for the VB forum)
etc.

Custom fields for each forum where an op selects from radio buttons or checkboxes or whatnot might be a bit much, but a forum-specific text reminder to include certain details might help. Even at 800x600, there's still room to the right of the Message textarea. Or maybe a small template as default text within the textarea itself when posting a new thread.
