I think the lack of clarity about the Reputation system is illustrated quite well in this very thread. On one of the posts on the first page there is a comment which reads:



For me, this comment seems a little out of place for reputation. Would it not have made more sense to make a new post quoting the reply he was referring to and adding the comment below.

Though, I personally use this forum mainly for the PHP section and sometimes other programming related sections, and I tend to think of Reputation as: "Yes, that is a good solution to the problem" or "No, that is a bad / unhelpful / misleading contribution to the question".

Realistically though, I don't think people will ever use reputation this way. Since people obviously post across one many sections, they can come to one section (e.g. PHP), having gained their rep in another section (e.g. The Lounge), and try to use their reputation as leverage in an argument (e.g. "My for loop is better -- look at my rep!").

Ultimately Rep is and will remain a quirk of the boards, something that's fun to have but will never be taken seriously.

ok, so he hasn't provided a solution to any programming or website problem, but since reputation is enabled and available in every forum, I'd have thought that a post like that was exactly the type that you could rep++.



That I agree with and I think rep should be disabled in the lounge but the admins don't seem to want to do this (or at least haven't given us any feedback on this idea).

Well, like I said before, I think rep is a handy thing, and can be taken seriously if you deal exclusively with problems, something like experts-exchange, but I serves more as a reflection of the persons personality maybe on a regular forum where people get rep for being funny etc.

Rep provides a clean way to leave small comments about a post, even in the lounge it is nice to be able to use it.

It may be just that since they implement their changes uniformly across all their boards, they may simply not want to either make Dev Shed a unique case, or disable rep in all Lounge's, because we're probably the only abusers of the system....
